1. Komodo National Park, West Flores
It takes 250 nautical miles to sail from Bali to Komodo National Park. The route takes in the sights, sounds, and scenery of the large islands of Lombok and Sumbawa. Other island destinations include the Gilis, Kramat, Moyo, Satonda, and the magnificent 2,000-metre-high twin-peaked volcano of Sangeang, before finishing at the remote island of Gili Banta, on the doorstep of the Komodo National Park.
Along the way, there are many highlights, including volcanoes, untouched beaches and sandy strands, waterfalls, nature reserves, and breathtaking snorkelling sites with almost no one else around.
Established as a World Heritage Site in 1980, the Komodo National Park is nestled between Sumbawa and Flores, the two largest and longest islands in a region of Indonesia known as Nusa Tenggara.
Comprising the three major islands of Komodo, Padar, and Rinca (and many smaller islands and rocky islets), the park encompasses 1,817 square kilometres. With its outstanding natural beauty and raw environment, Komodo is considered one of its most exciting yachting destinations.
Activities at the Komodo National Park include trekking to the peak of Rinca and Padar, enjoying spellbinding scenery, and, of course, swimming with Manta Rays and coming face-to-face with the Komodo Dragons. 2. Raja Ampat, Papua
The pristine Raja Ampat National Park is located offshore from the Bird's Head Peninsula, on the north-western tip of the continental-sized island of Papua, in far eastern Indonesia.
Raja Ampat covers 9.8 million acres of land and sea, an archipelago that comprises over 1,500 small islands surrounding the four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta, and Waigeo, and the smaller island of Kofi.
Thanks to its splendid location in the Coral Triangle and its unique position between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, it is now home to the richest marine biodiversity on earth. In fact, the Nature Conservancy and Conservation International say that around 75 per cent of the world's species live here.
The beauty of Raja Ampat is breathtaking, to say the least, and it is full of wonder both on land and underwater. Over 550 species of coral, 1,427 fish species and more than 700 different types of molluscs have made this a significant epicentre for marine life.
This is one of the few places on earth where you can see a wide range of marine life in their natural habitat. Some unique and fascinating species you may encounter in Raja Ampat include Black Mantas, Pygmy Seahorses, Mantis Shrimp and the Papuan Garden Eel, and sea turtles, sharks and dolphins and whales.
